Bill is a retired broker who enjoys golf twice a week and walks for 30 mins each day. Bill was 86 when he first heard about the benefits of Pilates for seniors and came to see us – four years ago. His primary concern was to maintain his agility, since his balance was not as good as it used to be. He was also having trouble bending forward to take the golf ball out of the hole!
During Bill’s initial 1-1 assessment, we noticed that there was a lack of segmental movement through his spine and that we needed to build strength in his hips and ankles. Bill’s Pilates teacher designed an exercise programme to help him become both stronger and more flexible in his hips and ankles, as well as allowing for better flexion and extension in his spine.
“Pilates can be a powerful antidote for stiffness and pain while helping seniors prevent their number one risk factor – falling.”
After the initial private sessions which Bill attended for about two years, we suggested that he join studio club. He likes the idea of working out at his own pace under the guidance of one our teachers in a small group environment.
Bill comes to studio club once a fortnight and also does some Pilates exercises that we recommended for him at home a couple of times each week.
Now at the age of 90, it’s great to see Bill feeling fitter and stronger than he did four years ago. He continues to walk at least 30 minutes each day, and feels noticeably taller now that his spine is straighter. Bill reports that his balance has improved, and he is now able to bend forward and easily take the golf ball out of the hole!
Just last week Bill remarked that an added benefit is the ability to now touch his toes – something he hasn’t been able to do for 20 years!
