To Love, Be Loved, Never Stop Learning, Never Stop Moving. That has always been my philosophy and motto in life. Pilates taught me how to put my ego aside, be at ease with not knowing everything, and truly understand what it means to never stop learning.
Where My Pilates Journey Began
I first encountered Pilates 10 years ago when I was living in Hong Kong. I was told that Pilates could help with flexibility, which I felt I needed. I wanted to be able to bend and touch my toes. I soon discovered that Pilates is so much more than flexibility. It opened a whole new world of muscle and body awareness. It was an epiphany moment; it was then that I decided that I had to make Pilates an indispensable part of my life.
Prior to my encounter with Pilates, I was very focused on activities such as running, swimming, scuba diving, and tennis. I never considered Pilates part of my workout routine, which was really silly, as I lived in New York City for three years where Joseph Pilates started his first studio. I used to walk by the studio every day on the way home from work. I had no idea.
I received my mat certification from Pilates ITC in Sydney, Australia in 2015, and started to teach small mat classes in a studio, Pilates Works in Sydney, where my first Pilates mentor was teaching. Soon after that, my husband and I moved to London. That’s when I began researching Pilates schools in London to further my skills, and embark on comprehensive training.
Why I Chose To Train with Polestar UK
There are so many choices, it can be overwhelming. I found taking the time talk to educators and taking classes at different schools very helpful. After attending several classes at Moss Pilates, home of Polestar UK, and speaking with Moss Pilates’ owners, Julia and Carl Moss, I chose to train with Polestar UK. It was definitely the best decision I could have made.
I love exploring the world and have lived in cities such as Singapore, New York, Hong Kong, Sydney, Shanghai and now London. Choosing Polestar was a natural fit because it is globally recognised, and the certification is transferable internationally. I was also drawn to Polestar’s science-based focus on biomechanics.
The course is thorough and demanding, with such high calibre educators, and exceptionally high standards for students. What I really like about Polestar is you feel like you are part of a family, and this family extends across the world.
The host studio also supports you with mentors and educators to help you along the journey. During the training course, I invested in regular one-to-one sessions with the educators, Liz Bussey and Diane Nye, to check in on my progress.

How My Polestar Pilates Buddies Changed My Life
I found that having a Pilates buddy to train with during the course really helped me to stay accountable and on track. I was very fortunate to have one, Catherine Lamoureux, who also qualified as a Polestar studio teacher, and is now teaching with Garuda Pilates. We took weekly mentor sessions with Liliana Ferreira, and we learned so much from each other.
The three of us still catch up once a month to move and learn from each other. The people in my support network have become friends for life, and the connections did not stop after graduation.
Completing the training and graduating is just part of a lifelong journey. I started to discover more things that I didn’t know, and it is truly a case of “the more you know, the more you don’t know”.
There is no end point in a Pilates journey, and you don’t arrive at definitive destinations. You will only struggle if you try to find them. The best advice I can give a new Pilates teacher is to embrace the journey, and be comfortable with not knowing everything. Even after you graduate, be comfortable with continual learning.
Remember, don’t be too hard on yourself – we are all learning.
We need to put our egos aside; that’s when we can truly enjoy the Pilates journey and become successful teachers. Start to form an authentic way of teaching, develop self-confidence and belief in yourself. It’s your journey and you are in control of the outcome. You will get as much out as you put in.
I am continually broadening my skills by attending mentor sessions, classes and workshops with different teachers from various backgrounds in London and around the world.
Being a Polestar Pilates Student Takes Practice
The more exposure and Pilates practice you get, the more you feel it in your body, and the more clearly you can pass on the knowledge. I observe bodies differently to how I did a few months ago, and am constantly applying what I have learned to help my clients enjoy a positive movement experience.
My goal when teaching a group class or a one-to-one client is to create a positive and pain free movement experience. I encourage my clients to keep moving, improve body awareness, and apply the movement strategies that they learn from Pilates to day to day living.
I want to empower clients to take charge of their own health and happiness. In the words of Joseph Pilates: “Be in control of your mind and body, not at their mercy”.
I juggle a full time job with my Pilates business – training, learning, teaching on top of working in a corporate job. Many people ask how I do it, and I say it’s passion.
There are times when it will be hard, such as trading your social life to train and teach in the evenings and weekends. If it is something that you truly love and believe in, you will find the energy to make it happen. I am very lucky to have found that.
Teaching Pilates Is My Career Now
Since graduating from Polestar UK, I have been teaching at various studios in London in addition to Moss Pilates. I have also started my own home studio to teach clients one-to-one, called Positive Bubble.
Building your own business comes with challenges, and again, if you bring the mind-set ‘go with the flow’, and learn along the way, you will find it to be a very fulfilling journey.
I am starting to build a client base slowly through social media, local promotions and word of mouth, and who knows where this will take me.
I love the studio space I have created and I always feel more energised after teaching, no matter how tired I felt at the beginning of a session. It is extremely rewarding to make a difference to people’s life and wellness.
I am also very lucky to have a very supportive husband who has the same values and love for health and wellness. He is a certified meditation teacher and we have combined our skills to give workshops that marry the benefits of Mindful Meditation and Pilates to empower people with strategies that they can apply to execute their day to day activities with ease and positivity.
As you reach milestones along the way, you will find that it is a never-ending learning journey. Be present and be in the moment, as there isn’t really an end point that you will arrive at. It’s a continuous journey.
Maintain an open mind, grow and evolve along the way. Never stop learning and never stop moving.
