As Pilates teachers, we work with people who bring much more to the studio than a diagnosis, an injury or a movement limitation.
Introduction to Pathokinesiology explores how pathology, physiology and movement interact, helping you develop a broader understanding of what may be influencing the person in front of you and their ability to move and participate fully in life.
Led by Dr. Brent Anderson, this 6-hour course introduces the foundations of Pathokinesiology and explores movement through multiple physiological systems, including the neuro-musculoskeletal, integumentary, respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
Through lecture, case studies, problem-solving and movement, you’ll begin to look beyond individual muscles and joints and consider the wider systems that influence movement, function and participation.
The aim is not to diagnose or treat pathology outside your scope of practice. Instead, the course will help you develop a deeper understanding of the body, make more informed movement choices and better understand your role within the wider continuum of care.

What Will You Learn?
By the end of the course, you will:
- Develop a broader understanding of the many factors that influence a person’s ability to move and participate fully in life.
- Explore how kinesiology, physiology and pathology interact and how this knowledge can inform your approach to movement and programme design.
- Experience movement through the perspective of different physiological systems, including the neuro-musculoskeletal, integumentary, respiratory and cardiovascular systems.
- Gain insight into the body’s natural ability to maintain homeostasis.
- Understand the relationship between human movement and homeostatic regulation.
- Begin applying these concepts through case studies, problem-solving and practical movement experiences.
Who Is This Course For?
This course is particularly relevant for Pilates teachers and movement professionals who want to deepen their understanding of the body and feel more confident working with the complexity of the clients they see every day.
It will be especially valuable if you:
